About

Bruce McMillian

"I  graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Central  University in 1985 and subsequently earned a Masters of Arts from  Atlanta University in 1987.  I graduated with academic honors from both  programs.  Prior to    my academic pursuits, I proudly served in the  United States Army and honorably discharged in 1980.  In 1987, I  embarked on a rewarding career with the federal government, retiring in  December 2018 after 35 years of dedicated service.  My federal service  was with United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and  the Federal Aviation Administration.  Parallel to my government tenure, I  have been deeply committed to community activism for three and a half  decades. I have had the privilege of working alongside notable  organizations such as Rainbow Push and the People’s Agenda and a  community activist working with our elected officials to improve the  quality of life in our community.  I had the privilege of working  alongside Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dr. Joseph Lowery. Rev. Cameroon Alexander  and many others within the civil rights community.  Working these  individuals was very rich and rewarding and helped sharpen and broaden  my ability to serve.  These great men and others had a direct impact on  my learning how to work within those of power and get positive results  in moving our community forward.

My  leadership roles have been manifold. I served as the Chair for  Southwest Dekalb High School Council for three years, during which I was  instrumental in securing $35 million for the construction of new  facilities and the renovation of the campus.  I was appointed to the  Dekalb County School Closing Board, and a member of the SPLOST I  committee for Dekalb County Government.  On the school closing, I worked  tirelessly to keep open many of the schools in our community that  others wanted closed.  While sitting on the SPLOST I committee, I  advocate for our community receiving a fair share of the funding that  was to be generated from the sales tax revenue.

Beyond  my local community, my commitment to service knows no borders. I have  volunteered in Haiti, Brazil, and Africa, often working side by side  with Joe Beasley.  For example, we traveled to Haiti ten days after the  earthquake to help in the relief and recovery efforts.  My undying  mission is to continually volunteer and uplift the quality of life in  our community." ---  .
